HISTORIC RAPHAEL SORIANO LUKENS HOUSE

historic Raphael Soriano Lukens House

The historic Raphael Soriano Lukens House is a true gem in the architectural history of Los Angeles. Built in 1940, the house is one of the first examples of international style architecture in the city. The house is notable for its clean lines and simple geometric design, which was ahead of its time.

Living room of the historic Raphael Soriano Lukens House

The house was originally built for noted ceramicist Glen Lukens, who was one of the founders of Arts & Architecture magazine. The house is a perfect reflection of his aesthetic sensibility. It is simple, elegant, and unpretentious – a true work of art.

As a young man, Frank Gehry was originally drawn to fine arts, it was through Soriano he would be exposed to architecture. He would often watch as Soriano designed the home for Lukens and he was immediately struck by Soriano’s creative use of space and light and the way he was able to turn a functional home into a work of art. From that moment on, Gehry knew that he wanted to pursue a career in architecture. The rest, is history.

The home is a beautifully designed piece of architecture that takes its cues from the classic Bauhaus style. The most notable features include the flat roof, large overhanging eaves and ribbon band steel frame windows. These elements work together to create a sleek, modern look that is both eye-catching and functional.

The historic three-bedroom, two-bath home is located in the heart of historic Jefferson Park. This home is perfect for hosting large gatherings. The approximately 20,000 square ft. lot provides plenty of room for entertaining, and the large deck and screening area are ideal for hosting parties or barbecues.

The home is situated on a large lot and features a lush beautiful garden that was originally part of West Adams’s Lyndsay Mansion.

Dining pavilion of the historic Raphael Soriano Lukens House

The home’s 1908 glass greenhouse has been restored and repurposed as an extraordinary dining pavilion, blending seamlessly with the lushly landscaped grounds and creating a stunning focal point. In addition, the grounds include a basketball court that could easily be converted into a playground, garden, or any other type of recreational space. The property was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 2007 and has received numerous California preservation awards from multiple organizations. It stands as an iconic symbol of modern design in LA.
