SUNSET STRIP RICHARD NEUTRA HOME – THE GALKA SCHEYER HOUSE

1880 Blue Heights Drive, Los Angeles, CA | $3,600,000 | 2 BD | 3 BA
A rare offering of this incredible Sunset Strip Richard Neutra home — The Galka Scheyer House. Built in 1934, the residence celebrates both architectural beauty and functionality. In 1936, architect Gregory Ain added a second story to the house. Built for client Galka Scheyer, a force in the art world, she was dubbed the “Maven of Modernism” and nicknamed “Galka” (inquisitive crow) by Alexej von Jawlenski.

In 1931, Scheyer, originally from Germany, took up residence at the Rudolph Schindler’s Kings Road House. During her stay, she crossed paths with Richard and Dione Neutra, who had previously lived in the house. Two years later, Scheyer enlisted the services of Neutra to design an architectural home for her. The structure was intended to serve as both a residence and a gallery to showcase the artwork that Scheyer was promoting and collecting. The gallery-style living room is a masterpiece with its elegant design and spacious layout. There is also a separate office, a perfect space for working from home. Built-ins provide ample storage for books, documents and other essentials.

The house became a hub for artists and visionaries, attracting a diverse range of visitors, including the groundbreaking avant-garde filmmaker Maya Deren. Scheyer’s unwavering commitment to the arts and culture earned her a reputation as a trailblazer in the field. She handpicked the idyllic location for her home, naming the street Blue Heights Drive, where she lived until her death in 1945, surrounded by the ethereal beauty of the clouds.

The residence boasts two spacious bedrooms, each with ample room for comfortable living and rest. The three well-appointed baths are bright and updated for modern living. Approaching the private drive today, one sees Neutra’s signature spider leg immediately and it is easy to imagine what Scheyer felt she could create with Richard Neutra at the apex of this hill. Scheyer’s collection is housed permanently at the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena.

The side patio is a peaceful retreat that offers a serene space to relax, unwind and take in the views. There is a bonus room with a bath and sauna that makes a luxurious addition for guests or use as a personal spa. The laundry area is conveniently located adjacent to the garage.

This stunning residence boasts a design that showcases the seamless blending of Gregory Ain’s modernist style with Richard Neutra’s original design. Ain’s second-story addition is a thoughtful space that features floor-to-ceiling windows and a rooftop terrace. The attention to detail in every aspect of the home’s architecture ensures a designed living experience with the city of Los Angeles as a backdrop.
