While Burlew’s contributions to the built environment may have gone largely undervalued, his work, however, is no less important than his modern master contemporaries.

Burlew’s site detailed design of this Encino Mid Century Modern house – Gattman Residence offers a dual narrative: a more formal, street-facing facade and a relaxed, laissez-faire southern-facing rear side of the house.

Both narratives work together which, coupled with the lush landscape, sparkling pool, and deep setback from the street, provide a break from the outside world.

Original character-defining features are found inside and out of the residence. Articulated dentil molding on the fascia board wraps the perimeter of the house, carport, and garage.

Mosaic tiles and rich-hued walnut panels in the foyer, colorful resin windows flanking the fireplace hearth, and a raised formal dining room are reminiscent of neo-classicism and revivalist architecture of the recent past.

A large den off the updated kitchen provides an ideal space for relaxing on days off.
