REIMAGINED MID CENTURY BEL AIR HOME

GRAPHIC GREATNESS

Mid Century Bel Air Home reimagined by architect Stephen Phillips

This reimagined mid century Bel Air home looks to be pulled from the pages of Dwell magazine. Architect Stephen Phillips, FAIA, Ph.D., has conceived a stylish and hip redesign of this lush canyon tree house, originally created by Bill Mack in 1959.

Starting from the building’s original core design, the architect sensitively updated systems, windows, doors, decking and more to modernize the residence for contemporary living. Specified materials have been thoughtfully chosen for their truth in function and design; vertical grain Douglas Fir, Redwood and Cherry, blend seamlessly with stainless steel and stone to create a striking update.

Floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors brings the verdant landscape indoors. Light-filled spaces set the mood for the inspirational interiors. The home has been updated with dual-glazed windows, mini-split systems, electric car chargers and energy-efficient insulation.

The bright airy kitchen boasts an island perfect for meal preparation and entertaining. Stainless-steel Viking energy star appliances continue the architects’ focus on sustainable building practices throughout the home. Light fixtures from design icons, Poul Henningsen, George Nelson and Verner Panton complete the experience.

The primary bedroom offers high ceilings, clerestory windows and expansive walls of glass opening up to a private deck and spectacular canyon views. The space creates a stylish retreat perfect for inspired city living.

The home’s striking façade incorporates an eye-catching supergraphic and custom water-jet cut aluminum guardrails. These architectural elements offer privacy while creating an incredible focal point. The architect was inspired by the work of graphic designer Barbara Stauffacher Solomon, whose bold designs graced the walls of architect Charles Moore’s architectural utopian paradise Sea Ranch in Sonoma County. While maintaining the beauty and design intent of the original mid century modern structure, this Bel Air canyon tree house is a perfect place for aspirational Los Angeles living.
