INNOVATIVE VISIONARY

. . . . . . . . . . . .

Ray Kappe Homes for Sale | Southern California modern architect, Ray Kappe (1927-2019) was originally born in Minneapolis, spending much of his early childhood in and around Minnesota’s beautiful parks, lakes and wooded landscape. In 1940, Kappe’s family moved to Los Angeles, he would graduate from UC Berkeley’s School of Architecture in 1951, working alongside architect Carl Maston until opening his own practice in 1954.

Kappe designed over 100 custom residences, in addition to numerous multi-family, pre-fab, educational, industrial and commercial buildings all based on his modular construction concept. Kappe’s own Pacific Palisades residence, completed in 1967, is regarded as one of the preeminent examples of a modern home design in the United States. Kappe came from the post and beam school of modernism, his buildings boast multiple levels in a series of flat-roofed horizontal volumes, continuous bands of large expanses of glass, creating both public and private spaces all with a connection to the landscape and the driving principle of bringing the outdoors in. He was also a Founding Director of SCI-Arc, a private a university focused on architecture located here in Los Angeles. The school is regarded as—both institutionally and artistically—more avant-garde than traditional architecture schools based in the United States.
