Richard Neutra Auerbacher Home in Redlands

Richard Neutra Auerbacher home comes to auction. For purveyors of mid century modern architecture, Neutra’s design is at the top of the list. A rare opportunity to bid on the historic Auerbacher residence in Redlands, CA. In 1951, Frederick and Mary Jane Auerbacher commissioned Neutra, a friend of the couple, to design and build their home on a site overlooking the Redlands Country Club with views of the surrounding San Bernardino mountains. The home is believed to be the only Neutra property still in the same family that commissioned it.

Living rooom of Richard Neutra Auerbacher Home in Redlands

The open plan living room features wood wall paneling, tongue and groove Redwood ceilings and signature sliding floor to ceiling glass panels. The room was first conceived to be a functional space, large enough to hold small concerts and in which to teach music lessons. The sale of the property will include all the original furniture Neutra either designed or specified for the house.

The architect utilized the power of reflection in the dining area, by cladding the wall with mirror to bring the outdoors in on both sides of the dining table. Mrs. Auerbacher stated, “You see the view from every side. It is reflected in the windows, the mirrors… it is literally a glass house.” She also stated living in the home is akin to living in art.

PIn the primary suite, Neutra continues his use of wood wall paneling, tongue and groove Redwood strips, functional built-in furniture and reflectivity via mirrored panels.

A covered walkway and terrace lead to a serene outdoor wooded space to take in all nature has to offer. With expansive views, the home still feels private and secluded.

In 2012, the Auerbacher home was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The original blueprints and specification book will be included with the sale of the property. These specifications highlight materials, finishes and the actual nails used to construct the house. This is an incredible chance to live in a true mid century property by one of the period’s most iconic architects. If you’re looking for a lifestyle change or a perfect work-from-home scenario, this unique opportunity may be a great option. Redlands is a community approximately one hour east of Los Angeles and 45 minutes west of Palm Springs.
