Raphael Soriano Homes for Sale | Born in Rhodes, Greece, Raphael Soriano, (1904-1988) emigrated to the United States in 1924. After attending USC, Mr. Soriano worked briefly for Richard Neutra and Rudolph Schindler. Soriano’s main design influence was the International Style and the work coming from the European architects.
He was celebrated for the utilization of plywood as a building material – steel and aluminum were also trademarks of his designs. Throughout the 1930s, 40s and 50s, he built dozens of modern houses in the Los Angeles area, including Case Study House 1950 in Pacific Palisades, CA and the Julius Shulman house and studio in Los Angeles. Architect Pierre Koenig adapted Soriano’s designs to create both Case Study #21 (the Bailey House) and Case Study #22 (the Stahl House). Soriano also worked with developer Joseph Eichler in the bay area, where in 1955, he designed the first mass produced steel house. Los Angeles became a hub of post-war design and experimentation as visionary architects reshaped residential living. Their steel-and-glass homes, post-and-beam structures, sliding walls and expansive windows embraced natural materials, open floor plans and Southern California’s indoor-outdoor lifestyle.
