Richard Neutra Hendershot House Designed in 1962
Offered for only the second time in its history, the Richard Neutra Hendershot House is an iconic Los Angeles mid-century modern residence designed by Richard Neutra in 1962. Created for Robert Hendershot, a professional in design, commercial art and advertising and his wife Harumi Taniguchi, a painter, poet and dancer, the home reflects Neutra’s refined understanding of architecture, landscape and daily life.
Documented in Dr. Barbara Lamprecht’s authoritative Taschen monograph on Richard Neutra’s complete works, the Hendershot House stands as an important work within the architect’s late career. Its composition of ribbon windows, deep overhangs, full-height sliding glass walls and precise horizontal lines creates a graceful dialogue between structure, light and nature.
A Mid Century Modern Home Shaped by Nichols Canyon
Set in Upper Nichols Canyon, the Richard Neutra Hendershot House occupies a private canyon within a canyon, surrounded by mature trees, native plantings and a year-round natural creek. Neutra’s design responds masterfully to the sloping site, allowing the home to descend through the landscape while framing views of the wooded arroyo from nearly every room.
The result is a mid-century modern home that feels both architectural and deeply immersive. Glass walls, outdoor decks and layered interior-exterior transitions blur the boundary between house and canyon, turning the surrounding landscape into a living part of the experience.
A Living Neutra Legacy with Additions by Dion Neutra and John Blanton
What further distinguishes the Hendershot House is its evolution through Richard Neutra’s own architectural lineage. In 1982, Richard Neutra’s son and partner Dion Neutra designed an addition that expanded the property while remaining connected to the original architectural language.
In 1994, John Blanton, one of Neutra’s trusted lead project architects, completed a two-story addition at the northeast corner of the home. These carefully considered interventions give the Richard Neutra Hendershot House a level of continuity in the Neutra canon, creating a living architectural document shaped by the architect, his son and a key member of his office.
Award-Winning Rehabilitation Guided by Neutra Archives
Current owner and real estate developer-architect Eve Steele completed an exemplary two-year rehabilitation rooted in archival research, original drawings, historical specifications and correspondence from the Hendershot estate and UCLA archives. The work restored or replaced important original details including built-in cabinetry, flooring, wood finishes, the brick fireplace and Neutra’s precise paint colors.
The renovation also sensitively expanded the kitchen and dining area while preserving the home’s architectural identity. This thoughtful rehabilitation earned a 2023 AIA|LA Board of Directors Emerging Practice Award, recognizing the project’s design excellence and its careful stewardship of a significant mid century modern residence.
Three Levels of Refined Mid Century Modern Living
Spanning approximately 3,371 square feet across three levels, the Richard Neutra Hendershot House offers a combination of historical significance and present-day livability. The entry level includes an expanded kitchen and dining area, library, living room with fireplace and a primary suite with bath, dressing room, window seat and private outdoor access.
The second level includes three additional bedrooms, three baths, a second living room with fireplace, bar and laundry. Below, a flexible office, gym or den opens through full-height glass walls to a wood terrace above the natural creek and wooded arroyo.
Hardwood floors, floating stairs, four outdoor decks, new foundation walls, updated plumbing and electrical systems, generator, central vacuum, full security system and EV-ready two-car garage complete a home that is both stunningly architectural yet remarkably livable. The Hendershot House is more than a iconic Richard Neutra residence. It is a layered mid century modern sanctuary where design history, canyon landscape and everyday life meet in extraordinary balance. Listing Courtesy of Barry Gray & Mike Deasy, Compass.
