THE EVOLUTION OF LEISURE LIVING AND POOL CULTURE

In the mid-twentieth century, technological, economic and cultural shifts transformed the backyard pool into a coveted private amenity. A groundbreaking advancement in construction technology – known as gunite – revolutionized the construction of residential pools. This method not only streamlined the process but also made it more cost-effective, enabling the creation of durable and aesthetically pleasing pools. The post-war economic boom of the 1950s marked a pivotal era for the residential pool. Owning a pool became synonymous with middle-class success and epitomized the American Dream. As a symbol of leisure and luxury, the swimming pool quickly became one of the most requested amenities by new home buyers.

Additionally, the number of people proficient in swimming increased significantly, primarily due to military training during World War II. Navy veterans, in particular, returned home equipped with swimming skills that further fueled the public’s interest in aquatic activities.

As a result of these dynamic changes, the desire to build personal pools surged, leading to an explosion in their popularity throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Tens of thousands of families added pools to their homes, embracing this emblem of comfort and social status and transforming their living spaces into havens of relaxation and entertainment.

MID-CENTURY STYLE: INSPIRATION FROM SLIM AARONS AND PALM SPRINGS

Looking for inspiration to create your Mid-Century Modern outdoor oasis? Whether it’s a pool party in the Hollywood Hills, weekend lounging in Palm Springs, or a beachside stroll in St. Tropez, it doesn’t get much better than the striking visual imagery captured by photographer Slim Aarons. Showcasing a world filled with elevated style and luxury, his images of actors, socialites and aristocrats frolicking in glamorous locations around the world evoke a carefree sophistication in an enviable era. Poolside Gossip (1970), one of Aaron’s most iconic images, is taken around a glistening pool at the Kaufmann house, architect Richard Neutra’s classic mid-century modern residence in Palm Springs. With cocktails in hand and donning the latest poolside fashions, it begs to ask, what ARE these ladies talking about? Aaron’s photographs epitomize mid-century modern cool and offer beautiful inspiration for your backyard oasis.

ICONIC EXAMPLES OF MID-CENTURY MODERN POOLS

The Kaufmann House Pool – Palm Springs | Perhaps no mid-century modern pool is more iconic than the one at the Kaufmann Desert House in Palm Springs, designed by Richard Neutra in 1946. The pool’s sleek design and integration with the surrounding desert landscape make it a quintessential example of mid-century modern aesthetics.

The Stahl House Pool – Los Angeles | Designed by architect Pierre Koenig (Case Study House #22), the pool exemplifies mid-century modern design through its use of space and panoramic views of Los Angeles. Its placement extends the house into the skyline, blurring the lines between the built and natural environments.

Architect A. Quincy Jones designed the Arens House. Located in the Crestwood Hills area of Los Angeles’s Brentwood neighborhood. This post-and-beam mid-century architectural design celebrates outdoor living with a stylish oval-shaped swimming pool.

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE DETAILS

The Proper Plants | Adding color and texture to your mid-century oasis with plants is a great way to create a dramatic space while adding visual interest. Many different types of plants can help achieve an artfully designed look. From sculptural succulents, which celebrate desert vibes to lush tropicals – the right plants will add drama and beauty to your poolside oasis.

The Proper Decking | Choosing the right material to highlight and surround your pool will make your mid-century oasis sparkle, while being functional and safe. Concrete is one of the most popular materials used for pool decks. It’s durable, slip-resistant, and easy to care for. Pavers are another popular choice for pool decks. They’re available in various colors and styles to achieve a one-of-a-kind look. Wood is an attractive choice if you’re looking for a warmer material to elevate your pool deck. Ipe, redwood, teak, or cedar are all excellent options for decking around the swimming pool.

The Proper Lighting | Lighting is a crucial upgrade to add drama and interest to your outdoor retreat. Uplighting can be used to highlight architectural features or accentuate landscaping. Downlighting can create a more intimate setting for entertaining or relaxing. Try using both lighting options to turn your pool area into a true outdoor oasis.

The Proper Colors and Accessories | Use your interior color palette to give the transition from indoors to outdoors to create a  cohesive feel and enhance your backyard space. Choosing outdoor furniture and accessories with a vintage flair will amp up you mid-century retro outdoor experience.
